Iosco County

Iosco County is located along Lake Huron and tourism has long been its chief economy. It was home, though, to the Wurtsmith U.S. Air Force Base, which now has been successfully been transformed into a large industrial park, housing one of the country’s largest private cargo Air Companies, Kalitta Air. Sixty percent (60%) of total land is held in public ownership. This includes large portions of the Huron National forest and several state forests. The AuSable River, running across the northern portion of the county, has been designated as a “Wild and Scenic River” by the State. With US-23 running along the shoreline, Iosco is part of the six-county, State designated Huron Shores Heritage Route, one of 14 in the state.
